| Word | Meaning |
|
Hajime
(Ha-jimmy) |
"Begin". (Start/resume fighting) |
|
(Mat-ay)
|
"Wait/stop". |
| "Freeze". Used when the fighters, holding each other down, are off or nearly off the mat. The referee tells them to ‘freeze’ positions (stay exactly where they are) so he/she can drag them into the middle of the mat so that they can carry on.
Failure to remain still may result in a penalty. |
|
| "Carry on". Only used after Sono-Mama. After Matte is called Hajime is used to restart. | |
|
Osaekomi
(Os-ee-komi) |
"Holding". Used when someone is being held down, this tells the scorekeepers to start timing 30 seconds.
When Osaekomi is called, the referee will put his hand out over the fighters to signify the hold is on. |
| "Hold Broken". Used if the person being held manages to get out of the holddown. (eg. by getting to their feet, wrapping both their legs around both their opponents legs, turning onto their front etc)
When Toketa is called, the ref (who had his hand over the fighters to signify Osaekomi) will wave his hand from side to side to signify that the hold has been broken. |
|
| "I surrender". Used by one of the fighters if he/she submits to an armlock or strangle (or anything else) and cannot ‘tap’ with their hands or feet. Personally, here I use Matte (I didn’t even know about Maitta until I read the back of the book). | |
|
Hantei
(Han-tie) |
"Give me the winner". Used at the end of a fight where both fighters are drawing. The referee will call ‘Hantei’ and ask the corner-judges to signal who they think won. (They indicate their decision by holding up a red or white flag - these colours being the colours of the fighters belts - red flag meaning the fighter with the red belt etc etc).
If no decision can be made, they may choose to allow the fight to continue for an extra minute. |
|
Sore-Made
(Sor-eh-mad-ay) |
"End of contest/that is all". Nuff said. |
